Healthy Does Not Mean Calorie-Free

Some of my friends and family are still amazed that you can eat something like my version of a koeksister or lemon tart, something that feels completely naughty, and still live a healthy lifestyle. And this is coming from someone who used to be ill constantly.

When people visit us on the farm, there is almost always something homemade to eat. The latest thing I made was peanut butter balls that honestly looked like Ferrero Rocher chocolates, except mine were made without gluten, refined sugar or cow’s milk. One guest ate quite a few of them and said, “It’s so nice to eat something guilt-free.”

And I laughed and said, “Yes, but always remember, healthy does not mean calorie-free!”

That is such an important distinction to make.

I think many people assume that if something is made from whole-food ingredients, it can simply be eaten endlessly without consequence. While I absolutely believe that nourishing ingredients are kinder to the body, more supportive of overall health and generally a far better choice than ultra-processed foods, calories still matter.

Nuts, nut butters, honey, coconut products and healthy baked treats can still be very energy-dense, even when they are made with beautiful, wholesome ingredients.

My lifestyle has never been about “diet food.” In fact, Healthy Indulgence was born because I became tired of believing that healthy eating had to mean dry salads and boring meals forever. I wanted to create food that felt comforting, celebratory and indulgent - while still being mindful of ingredients that worked for my body.

The reason I have been able to maintain my weight and build lean mass while still enjoying these foods is because I remain aware of my overall calorie intake and balance throughout the day. I make indulgence fit into my lifestyle intentionally.

So yes - healthy can absolutely be delicious. Healthy can feel indulgent. Healthy can even taste decadent.

But healthy does not automatically mean calorie-free.
